Job Summary:

The Multnomah County Drainage District (MCDD) protects a large part of greater Portland along the Columbia River from flooding. MCDD manages four public agencies, led by elected boards, that collectively operate and maintain 27 miles of flood protection levees, 12 pump stations and 45 miles of sloughs, canals, and culverts. The Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technician Assistant position will perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to the operation of vehicles and heavy-duty equipment, including trucks and trailers, herbicide spray tanks, forklift, hydro-seeders, and farm tractors on slopes. This position will also perform servicing and minor repairs to tools and equipment, perform manual labor tasks with small equipment and hand tools, perform building maintenance and application of general use herbicides, and complete paperwork associated with different recordkeeping and administrative tasks. Work is performed in partnership with the operations crew or independently.

Essential Duties:

  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Follow all safety standards and guidelines
  • On-call responsibilities on weekends and holidays when assigned
  • Participate in facility and fleet maintenance
  • Identify and solve problems observes in the drainage and levee systems
  • Document observations of work performed
  • Assist with routine maintenance in:
    • Levee systems
    • Pump station systems
    • Drainage ways
    • Facilities repairs
  • Perform essential core tasks for system reliability:
    • Weekly pump station inspections
    • Drainage way clearing and debris removal
    • Pump station and culvert grates clearing
    • Levee mowing and other vegetation removal
    • Weed-eating pump station and levee areas
    • Herbicide application
  • Working on and over water
  • Operating heavy equipment
  • Operating chainsaws/ pull saws
  • Schedule Requirements: 7am-3:30pm: Monday-Friday; Summer schedule may change based on operational needs.

Knowledge of:

  • Safe work practices and the safety culture, working with power tools and equipment
  • Reading, math, and communication (oral, listening and written) skills equivalent to those obtained by completing high school or commensurate experience.
  • Ability to:
    • Work in team environment
    • have a positive attitude in work setting
    • ability to learn and apply safety techniques and standards
    • periodically bend, twist and climb in and out of vehicles and equipment
    • required to climb and/or work on steep slopes and uneven ground
    • work with pesticides and other chemicals safely
    • work on water
    • use computers or other electronic devices to document work
    • lift 50 pounds and maneuver 100 pounds
    • work outdoors for extended periods under unfavorable conditions
    • pass pre-employment drug screening
    • read, write, and communicate orally in the English language

Education, Experience, and Special Requirements: 0-2 years related experience, high school diploma or G.E.D, Valid class A CDL

Preferred Experience and/or Qualifications: 

  • Operating farm tractor equipment
  • Herbicide application/ Applicators license
  • Construction site safety awareness/ certifications
  • Ability to operate work boat with outboard motor
  • Mechanical experience

Compensation: $34,509-$62,212 (dependent on experience)
