Portland’5 is seeking an Operating Engineer I candidate to thrive in a unique environment, with multiple buildings and complex technical systems. It takes an adept and experienced Engineer with excellent technical skills to operate, support, and maintain these unique facilities.

As Portland’5 Operating Engineer I, you will provide direct maintenance and repair services to the Portland’5 facilities, as well as to our staff and clients.

As an Operating Engineer I you will:
Perform repair and maintenance of:

  • Air conditioning and refrigeration systems
  • Boilers and heating systems
  • Pumps and couplers
  • Valves, piping and distribution systems
  • Fire Safety Systems
  • HVAC system components
  • Kitchen and concession equipment
  • Windows, doors, door closers, door locks and latches
  • Non-electrical portions of Lighting fixtures, interior and exterior
  • Building envelopes (exterior doors, windows, etc.)
  • Repair and replace plumbing fixtures; clean drains
  • Operate HVAC controls and control computers for daily facility needs, as well as for shows and events as needed
  • Interface with outside contractors who perform various regular maintenance, emergency maintenance and repair functions
  • Solder and braze copper
  • Weld various materials with various methods – i.e.: stick, wire, TIG, MIG
  • Perform basic carpentry and make repairs to wood features and furnishings
  • Perform some limited duties associated with network infrastructure needs such as; troubleshooting network connectivity issues
  • Assist with some event setups that require temporary power hookups, telephone and network connections, etc.

Attributes for success:

  • Punctuality and history of good attendance
  • Experience with operation and maintenance of low-pressure and condensing boilers, centrifugal and modular scroll chillers, open and closed loop cooling towers
  • Understanding of electrical, mechanical and DDC controls.
  • Ability to maintain and repair plumbing fixtures
  • Ability to maintain and repair doors, door closers, windows, latches and locksets
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public
  • Work independently, with other engineers, employees, and the general public
  • Work smoothly with outside repair and maintenance contractors in various disciplines
  • Reading and understanding drawings and diagrams such as schematics, one-line diagrams, building mechanical, fire protection and floor plans
  • Reading and following written and oral instructions
  • Write clear, descriptive and understandable reports and maintenance ticket responses
  • Enter data into, and follow work orders generated by, facility CMMS software
  • Perform tasks that occasionally require heavy lifting, moving, etc.

TO QUALIFY
Not all of the above qualifications are absolutely necessary for a person to be hired for this position.  We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying unless an item or section is labeled required. Minimum qualifications:

  • One year of experience as an operating engineer in a large facility or Maintenance Technician in a medium to large commercial facility, OR
  • Any combination of education, professional, volunteer and lived experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.

Required:

  • Required possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Must be, or be willing to become, CPR and First Aid certified.
  • Able to work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays when required.

Like to have qualifications:
You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.

  • A good working knowledge of HVAC system components and controls.
  • IFMA credential, or other facility credential from an organization such as BOMA
  • General CFC Certificate
  • Refrigeration Brazing Certificate
  • Fall Protection Competent Person Certificate
  • Lock Technician or Locksmith Certificate
  • Network Infrastructure Certificate or Knowledge of basic TCP/IP networking hardware and physical infrastructure•    OSHA-10 or OSHA-30 certificate

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metro’s internal equity review process, and the candidates’ qualifications.

This is a union position, represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers, local 701, the starting pay for this position is $37.72 per hour, increasing to $39.50 after the successful completion of a six months’ probation.

This position is eligible for overtime and is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) local 701.
