Description
Job Summary: The Education Instructor works alongside the Manager of Partnerships and Programs, the Program Coordinator, other education instructors, interns, and volunteers to facilitate safe and inspirational classes and workshops in the ReBuilding Center Education Shop and Mobile Education Program E-Van. Teaching shifts, including preparation of materials and cleanup, range from 4-6 hours each, depending on programming. The Education Instructor teaches 2-3 classes per week, attends monthly meetings and check-ins, collaboratively prepares class materials, and ensures Education Shop cleanliness & equipment maintenance with the team.
Job Responsibilities:
- Deliver hands-on instruction of curriculum to adults & youth in 2-3 classes per week, each with a maximum of 14 participants.
- Engage students in design challenges & on-the-fly problem-solving with patience and a focus on positive learning & skill development.
- Prepare materials for classes.
- Teach our suite of classes with an evolving curriculum, including basic carpentry classes such as Tables & Benches, Carpentry Essentials, Cedar Garden Boxes, Cutting Boards, Table Saws, basic plumbing essentials such as Intro to Plumbing and Toilet Repair, and more.
- Train & coach fellow and new instructors in class flow, safety, setup, & best practices.
- Conduct one-on-one carpentry, home maintenance, and repair consultations.
- Collaborate with other Education staff to identify and implement improvements to the shop, programming, and departmental processes.
- Provide a welcoming educational experience with special emphasis on community members who have historically been excluded from construction environments.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
• Strong verbal communication skills and public speaking capabilities
• Minimum 1-2 years of personal or professional experience (including safe operation of related power tools and hand tools) in two or more of the following: hands-on carpentry (rough or finish), plumbing, electrical, or home repair & improvement, maintenance or handywork.
• Experience and passion for teaching, or comparable role providing instruction or training to individuals and groups
• Excellent interpersonal skills with communication & resolving conflict
• Demonstrated commitment to serving marginalized populations, including women, BIPOC, & LGBTQ communities
• Enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds
• Lift up to 50+ lbs. safely using ergonomically correct lifting methods throughout the workday
• Conduct repetitive movements including stacking, climbing, lifting, bending, & other related physical tasks on concrete floors throughout the day
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable 3-year driving history
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
• Experience with used and/or reclaimed building and remodeling materials
• Bilingual (preferably English/Spanish)
• Current 1st Aid/CPR certification
Compensation: $24/hour plus benefits
